The work presented here is the result of experiments carried out in a History class, with three 8th year elementary school classes, at EM CAIC Núbia Pereira de Magalhães Gomes, in the year 2024. The class in question sought to address the representations of independence of Brazil based on images of historical sources and characters. The objective of the work was to detect traces of common sense present in the student body when trying to identify which sources would or would not be related to Brazil's independence and explore different approaches to the use of sources in the classroom. From the presentation of each of the sources as documents/monuments, that is, presenting their context of production, students are led to reflect on what reasons made them believe that a certain image would or would not be related to the historical process studied. Thus, common sense traits are revealed that lead us to believe which characters we consider capable of being considered “historical” or not. We believe that such an experiment can help us reflect on the use of historical sources in elementary school classes, in the fruitful debate on the relationship between school historical knowledge and the “documentary revolution”, as well as historicize the present, leading students to recognize their determinations. socio-cultural.
